Serious sight loss brings many difficulties, not least the risk of loneliness, isolation and separation from the surrounding community – all of which have been exacerbated by the pandemic.
This is why local Talking Newspapers were created across the UK: they offer a link to what’s going on in the community by providing an audio version of local news stories, local and other relevant information, and a variety of features that provide interest or engage the listener.
St Albans & District Talking Newspaper (SADTN) – established in 1974 – provides local visually impaired residents (and others) with a weekly audio programme up to two hours long, containing news stories from the local paper, audiobook recommendations, suggested listening on national radio, details of television broadcasts that are audio described, upcoming events across the district and more.
